WHY SOFT SKILLS

Unfortunately, today, the search for talent is becoming increasingly difficult, creating a mismatch between the talent that is available and that needed by employers. Talent isn’t, just people, it is people with the specific skills, behaviors and a way of operating, that must be able to align with the needs of an organization.  Skills are vital for poverty reduction, economic recovery, and sustainability of a nation.

As the world get more entrenched in the global marketplace, many skills are needed in dealing with global customers on issues such as: imports, exports, international business, and ever evolving technology which is applied to local and international growth, SWOT, and capitalizing on best practices is a PRIZE.

Often overlooked and undervalued are the soft skills set.  These are skills necessary to compete in the global in the workforce. Many research reports that educational institutions are NOT teaching these skills as part of the curriculum.

USAID, The World Economic Forumand General Electric (GE) indicated in a report to Africa that soft skills are the KEY  to success worldwide and are in short supply. Ongoing research in the field supports the importance of soft skills, provides validation across regions and sectors, and evidence that soft skills can be taught. So, what are soft skills?

Soft skills are behaviours, attitudes, and personal qualities that enable people to effectively navigate their environment, and [these soft skills] complement technical (or hard skills like engineering and technology), vocational (electrical, plumbing, carpentry) and academic skills (conceptual). Hard skills and conceptual skills count but soft skills allow you to deal with people. Moreso, soft skills help develop social skills as getting along with others – known as interpersonal skills – as the most important skills to communication, listening, resolving conflict, making decisions, solving problems, teamwork, strategy, critical thinking analysis, emotional intelligence, integrity, empathy, and patience, allowing leaders or potential leaders to manage emotions, and regulate behaviours.

Hence, staying calm, listening intently, and presenting clear and persuasive evidence is a useful behaviour to employ in the workplace. More importantly, soft skills are often associated with leadership skills – whether made or trained -they unlock excellent value, so investing in soft skills is an INVESTMENT in leadership development.These are skills that can be learned.

Most HRM experts will tell you that in addition to credentials, experience, and abilities, honing these soft skills helps people get a job, keep a job, perform well, and earn more by getting your foot in the door of employers to make a difference and create more opportunities.

Today, GLOCAL is necessary – that means having global knowledge and local content. Since CHANGE is inevitable, knowing how to react to it is an EXCEPTIONAL SKILL.
